We might still be experiencing pretty summer-like weather, but it’s time to get hyped about fall. The new season brings about a vibrant uptick in Miami’s events and fun things to do, just the way we like it. From Oktoberfest Celebrations in Coral Gables and Redbull’s Underground Queer Rave, to blues-y shows in Fort Lauderdale, the sky is about to light up real hard. Monday, October 1st:

Diaspora Art in the Creole CityDiaspora Art in the Creole City conversation explores the local/transitional politics of culture and memorialization enacted at intersections in the heritage neighborhoods of Miami. MOCA Moving ImagesVisit MOCA for an evening screening of Coral Morphologic Coral City (2015). Founded in 2007 by marine biologist, Colin Foord and musician, J.D. McKay. Operation Pedro PanYou will be able to visit a 3,000-square-foot historic exhibit at the Art Gallery, adjacent to the Roca Theater, prepared by OPPG’s Historic Committee with original documents, photos, artifacts and memorabilia of life in Cuba and the exodus. The exhibit can be visited from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. There is no need to make reservations to visit the exhibit.  The 90-minute historic documentary: Operation Pedro Pan: The Cuban Children’s Exodus will be shown the same day at the Roca Theater starting at 3:00 p.m. RSVP is required for the documentary screening.

Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda: The Ashram ExperienceAlice Coltrane was a legendary jazz musician, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, John died, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate Alice turned to Indian spirituality, eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram.

Join PAMM Director, Franklin Sirmans, Actress and Arts Advocate, CCH Pounder, and Professor Sarah Clunis as they discuss CC’s vanguard collection of works curated by Sarah Clunis in “Queen: From the Collection of CCH Pounder” exhibited at Xavier University in November 2017. Queen aptly represents, explores and amplifies the strength of Black femininity through the lens of various themes including Afrofuturism, the Black Baroque, Eroticism, and Advocacy.
