Although we can already start feeling the heat, Miami certainly hasn’t lost its cultural charm. We’re settling into the lazier days of Spring’s peak, but there’s still tons of anticipation for good things on the horizon. April is rounding out with a huge band, y’all and we can’t wait for these next few weeks. Things like O, Miami’s poetry programming, Earth Day festivities, and Adobe’s Creative Jam all top the list. Monday, April 16th:
Sow:Poetry at Market Mondays – Arsht Market Mondays on April 16 will have a plantable paper workshop with Sow: Poetry, led by Ashley Quinn, Melanie Gapany, and Amy Arce. You’ll get to make your own seed paper out of poems! Throughout the month of April, Sow: Poetry takes on the task of creating “plantable poetry” to be “sowed” throughout the streets of Miami, mixing literature with flora and fauna.

Our Own Voices – Hannah Rose Nicholas (Philadelphia) and Annaliese Kowert (Miami) lead a concert of music and poetry inspired by the visceral and folk-minded String Quartet no.4 by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, and Strum by violinist and composer Jessie Montgomery. Related musical works include three newly commissioned pieces, for strings, vocals, and clarinet, by composers Abby Swidler, Daniel Pencer, and Borey Shin, that are based on poetry by children from Miami public schools. The final commission is by Miami composer and Frost School of Music Professor Shawn Crouch, working with text by Miami poet Annik Adey-Babinksi. The piece is entitled: “O Miami, With Love.”

Wynwood Life 2018 – Experience ALL of Wynwood in One Weekend. Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves! Check out all of the great features of the festival starting with the Art section with the 22nd Terrace Gallery, the Raw Project, the Thrifter Market with over 100 arts & crafts vendors and food trucks, and the unveiling of the Wynwood Cannons with life-sized spray paint cans painted by Wynwood’s TOP Artists. Climakaze Miami Beach: In conjunction with Siren Arts, and the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Climakaze Miami heads to Miami Beach with performances of Elizabeth Doud’s The Mermaid Tear Factory, followed by an Eco-Artist community gathering; a Bike-Dance-Swim Triathlon and the “Dear Climate” creative writing intensive taking place over the weekend at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, on bikeways and beaches.

Pine Rockland Plant Giveaway – Come by the garden and pick out your free native plant specific to South Florida’s Pine Rocklands and learn more about this globally endangered ecosystem. See the newly completed Pine Rockland Demonstration garden, a grant project they received from City of Miami Beach Government and Miami Beach Rising Above. Black Lounge Film Series – Black Lounge Film Series 4th edition of bringing global Black cinema to Overtown is back with an award-winning independent film entitled, “Black Cop” by Canadian Filmmaker, Cory Bowles. In collaboration with the Black Police Precinct & Courthouse Museum in Overtown, at the Overtown Performing Arts Center for an evening of music, a movie and discussion as we spotlight the Canadian Black Experience & Black Cops. Nu Deco at New World Center – Nu Deco Ensemble returns to New World Center for a world-premiere performance of Kishi Bashi’s Improvisations on EO 9066, a multi-media work honoring the 75th anniversary of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. This performance will also include music by Mason Bates, Dmitri Shostakovich, and a new symphonic suite of Depeche Mode by Sam Hyken.

Earth Day at The Wynwood Yard – The second annual Earth Day Festival where The Yard will be celebrating Mother Earth. This all-day event is open to all ages and will provide a wide range of activities and programming to elevate consciousness, create awareness, and educate our community about green initiatives and sustainability. The event, in partnership with Whole Foods Market and Andromeda Districtis open to the public and free to attend, though some workshops and activities will have a fee and require individual registration.

Entrevidas (Between Lives) – Critically-lauded artist Ana Maria Maiolino forces audiences to literally put themselves into the shoes of others in her internationally-toured piece “Entrevidas.” The piece was originally conceived in 1981, in the period between the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship and the democratic opening. Spectators were invited to cross an obstacle course of hundreds of eggs on a cobbled street of Rio de Janeiro to experience feelings of uncertainty and risk, while also asserting the resilience of life and of new beginnings.

Miami Creative Jam – The Adobe Creative Cloud team will host the Creative Jam presentations. This one-hour design showcase highlights the work of 3 local creative leaders. At the same time, in the next room, hand picked designers will be competing in the Creative Jam tournament, a 3-hour design charrette showdown. This event will have two categories: graphic design and UX/UI design. Once the Creative Jam presentations wrap, tournament participants will take the stage to share their creations with you. As part of the audience, you’ll vote on each submission and select the People’s Choice winner. There will also be Grand Prize winners decided by a group of Judges.

Hip Hoppa Locka – B-boys and B-girls, DJs, emcees, and Hip Hop heads unite under the arabesque skyline of Opa-locka—known for the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the Western hemisphere. Hip Hoppa Locka remixes multiple references in a celebration of Muslim artists in Hip Hop—highlighting female forerunners in particular.

Opening Night: Rancourt/Yatsuk-Horizons – Locust Projects hosts an opening reception for Horizons, a new commission by artist duo Rancourt/Yatsuk of Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by a multitude of sources including alternative medicine; theme park rides, get-rich-quick schemes, and near death experiences, Horizons explores the role of fantasy as a manipulative tool within the darkest corners of unfettered capitalism. The media driven installation is engineered to guide viewers through a layered indoctrination process and sales pitch, ultimately presenting an opportunity to “take the ONE action that will determine the path to the rest of your life.”

Lapalux LIVE – Stuart Howard, known to most as the longstanding and always-innovative Brainfeeder producer Lapalux, has experienced the kind of musical career that has the ability to leave individuals scratching their heads in equal parts wonder and admiration. After sending a simple spec email to Brainfeeder label owner and electronic music titan Flying Lotus back in 2010, Lapalux was quickly signed to the cult label where he released a stream of esteemed EPs and remixes for the likes of Bonobo, Andreya Triana, and Lianne La Havas amongst others.

A Mindful Miami – Brickell City Centre and Modern ŌM have teamed up, again, to raise the vibration in Miami on Sunday, April 22nd. Natural Wine Pairing Dinner – It’s a Natural Wine Pairing Dinner to benefit the Miami Rescue Mission. Miami Hacks Climate Change – The mission of this hackathon is to create art & technology solutions for local climate issues in South Florida. How can augmented reality and other art mediums work with technology to educate and activate citizens about climate change? This inaugural hackathon supports Miami Murals, a grassroots movement led by local artists & technologists to deliver an augmented reality mural series to spur environmental action around Miami-Dade County.

Cruise the Bay with Richard Blanco – Long inspired by the cultural diversity and beauty of Miami, the city where he spent most of his life, acclaimed Cuban American poet Richard Blanco will read from his works during an evening cruise onboard the Miami Lady. As the boat sails on Biscayne Bay under the stars, past illuminated landmarks old and new, audiences will hear a poetry that grapples with the state of the world and our place in it, and demonstrates why Miami remains an incubator for artistic talent in many fields.

Who, [Girl], Your [Man]? Modern Day Keh Mukarni – “Who, [Girl], Your [Man]?” is a modern take on Keh Mukarni, a genre of “say” and “deny” folk poetry in Hindavi literature involving two speakers seemingly discussing their lovers but ending instead in wordplay. While Keh Mukarni is traditionally performed as playful and sometimes sensual conversations between two female characters, “Who, [Girl], Your [Man]?” puts the pronouns in brackets to allow for inclusivity across the gender spectrum. Novice writers, seasoned poets, and those simply interested in participating in a new spin on an old form are invited to submit their poems guided by the examples provided. Create double entendres about avocados, zika, Pitbull – the more Miami, the better.

O, Burning Love Miami: 1 Day Love Burn – Love Burn’s first ever 1-day event to burn the World structure and Hands of Love at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. They’re calling it “O, Burning Love Miami”. Love Burn will celebrate together with O, Miami’s Poetry Festival.

Sunday, April 29th:
Silence Into Language – In the wake of the #metoo moment, how do we, as Audre Lorde says, write our “silence into language”? In this poetry workshop, we will look at the various ways in which poets have written directly and/or imaginatively about trauma and its aftermath. Through various exercises, and in a small intimate setting, participants will learn and practice various techniques for expression and reclamation of the unspeakable through poetry.

Candlelit Vinyasa & Sound Bath – With the Full Moon in Scorpio, this will be an evening of releasing all that is no longer serving us and tuning into ourselves.
