7 Can’t-Miss Moments at GroundUP Fest This Weekend

February 6, 2018admin

We’ve been hyping up this weekend’s GroundUP Music Festival for quite sometime and with good reason. Not only is the GRAMMY-winning Snarky Puppy and their family of fellow musicians taking over a historical venue like the North Beach Bandshell, but they’re providing attendees with an intimate alternative to your usual rager festival. See, GUM Fest is all about the music and the artists who bring it to life. It’s all about spontaneity and getting face-to-face with some of the most influential musicians out there. It’s on a level all its own, and we’ve broken down the things you can’t miss:

The Wood Brothers Songwriting Workshop

The entire weekend, GroundUP will have multiple in-depth talks and workshops that are bound to be mind-blowing. But getting to sit down with The Wood Brothers and learn about their songwriting process should be at the top of the list. Oliver Wood, bassist and badass of Medeski Martin & Wood, is bound to shed some heavy light.

Robert Glasper’s Sunday Set

What do names like Kendrick Lamar, J Dilla, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu have in common? Other than shared music roots, it’s Robert Glasper. The GRAMMY-winning producer and pianist has worked with some of the biggest names in music, killing it in the shadows. Without knowing it, you’ve probably jammed to his talents many times. So watch him do what he does best live.

The Badass Percussion Summit

Not often do you get to catch many world-class musicians from all backgrounds, playing the same instruments all at one go. At Saturday’s Percussion Summit, you’ll not only be able to learn from them, but watch them all play together. People like Future Man, Weedie Braimah, and Snarky Puppy will all be crowded together to explore the sounds of percussion in real time.

Béla Fleck and The Flecktones

Amongst the horns and bass lines you’ll get a rare treat to catch at GroundUP: the banjo. Now, we know that might not be the sexiest of instruments, but your mind will change once you see Béla Fleck. The man is considered one of the most innovative to pick up the instrument. The 16-time GRAMMY-winning artist fuses jazz with bluegrass and it’s absolutely breathtaking. Joined by the Wooten brothers, Victor and Roy “Future Man,” this one will definitely inspire awe.

Shaun Martin’s Go-Go Party

One of the OG keyboard players for Snarky Puppy, Shaun Martin is a joy to see play live. He’s a serious hype man and his stage presence is addictive. When he developed his solo work, many avid Snarky fans were excited to see him let loose completely. This year’s after-parties are taking place at the Miami Beach Resort & Spa, and this one’s a can’t-miss. Expect cameos from the festival’s big names and a whole lot of dancing.

A capella by the sea with Magda Giannikou

Last year, the breakout masterclass took place on the sand with Magda Giannikou of Banda Magda. She gathered 50+ people on the beach to sing and create sound together. If you’ve seen her perform, you’ll know that she’s mastered the power of voice. Which makes it an absolute pleasure to learn and share in that power at this interactive workshop.

Every Snarky Puppy Set of the weekend

We’re not kidding. Whether you’ve seen them dozens of times or it’s your first, there’s not a second to miss of Snarky Puppy. The massive band packs a punch with every song, each one more complex than the last. Watching ringleader, Michael League excitedly push the musicians on is just an added pleasure to an already delicious feast. Last year, the GRAMMY-winning group closed out the festival with over 20 musicians on stage. So let’s see how they top themselves this year!
