6 Things to Look Forward to at New World Center This Fall
October 4, 2017admin
If you weren’t already made aware, Miami has a plethora of wonderful cultural institutions peppered around our city, rising tall above the rest. We cover all of the usual bases: visual art from modern to classical, live performance houses rivaling even New York, and everything in the realm of music. It might be a new concept to many locals, but you can access award-winning quality culture virtually everywhere. Among them is America’s Orchestral Academy, the New World Symphony, housed at Frank Gehry’s first Florida commission: the New World Center. And aside from world-class musical performances, they have more up their sleeve this fall. Check out the top things to look out for:
Over the course of several months, New World Symphony and many cultural organizations asked Miami to record sounds that identify our vibrant city. After 1,050 submissions, they worked together to create a one-of-a-kind score: Miami in Movements and will be unveiling it for all to enjoy on Saturday, October 21st! Start the celebration early with free tours of the New World Center, pre-concert chats with the Project 305 artistic team and live performances by local artists at SoundScape Park before the concert.
Miami might have its fair share of outdoor wellness classes nearly every given day of the week, but none so artistic as the Yoga Mornings series hosted at the breathtaking SoundScape Park just in front of New World Center. Presented by Jackson Health, the series stands out above the rest by offering a unique experience with a lively and enthusiastic yoga class, and classical music all at once. See dates here.
For anyone who isn’t a self-proclaimed classical music enthusiast, Yo-Yo Ma is one of those names that has broken the mold and into the mainstream world. His level of talent is known the world over, from TV cameos on “Mozart in the Jungle”, to sold out shows everywhere. The acclaimed musician and humanitarian joins Michael Tilson Thomas and the Fellows for this once-in-a-lifetime performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center on October 28th and although it’s not our NWC, it’s definitely not to be missed.
Star Wars Celebration
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of George Lucas’ beloved movies, NWS is dedicating an entire Sunday morning to the series. The Force is strong with conductor Dean Whiteside as he leads famous themes for Yoda, Princess Leia and Darth Vader as well as the acclaimed John Williams score. They’ll even let you take some time to get to know the musical tools at their instrument petting zoo. Be sure come as your favorite character and pick sides. Get tickets here.
Pulse Late Night Jam
New World Center is transformed into one of the city’s most bumpin’ clubs once a year. Pulse: Late Night at New World Symphony is an event that every music buff around Miami looks forward to year after year and we’re not surprised they somehow find a way to top themselves every time. This year, they’re getting electronic on us by collaborating with always great local DJ duo, Dude Skywalker, for a blend of bass and beat. Get your tickets here.
Free Music in SoundScape Park
When looking at the New World Center, one thing immediately stands out and it’s the swirling strands of white structures and bougainvillea blossoms that take over the gorgeous SoundScape Park. It’s an anchor to the neighborhood and for the entire institution and it’s no surprise that the space is the home for many of their free community events. Their WALLCAST(R) concert series is where everyone is invited to catch a NWS performance projected live on the facade while picnicking on the lawn all available for free. Keep your eyes peeled for their schedule.
