Bring out the Hocus Pocus memes because October is finally here. And although the re-introduction of everything “Pumpkin Spice” might be crowding the newsphere, the city hasn’t skipped a beat in bringing out some serious culture to kick off the fall season. There’s internationally-acclaimed film screenings at Tower Theater, Hurricane Relief Efforts, III Points Music Festival’s triumphant return, and Nu Deco Ensemble’s third season launch. Sunday, October 1st:
Free Oceanfront Meditation Class – Come for a guided journey towards finding your center. Contemporary Architecture in Ethiopia – Learn about African modernism from architectural historian David Rifkind. Thursday, October 5th:
A People’s History of South Florida – A new program series about Miami’s history, from early settlers to its current evolution into a global city. Discussion points will include immigration, civil rights, gentrification, and other topics that help tell the story of the Magic City. In their first program, hear accounts from local community members about their immigration experiences, including the challenges and opportunities they faced after coming to the United States.

Jack Johnson – The former pro surfer has added 2017 tour dates through North America, which will be his first tour since 2014. The newly added shows are scheduled to begin on September 27 and wrap up on October 5. The opening act on these dates will be Bahamas. These are in addition to his previously announced concerts in which he is currently touring.

Unbranded Brewing Co BBQ & Tasting – Unbranded Brewing Co. is bringing their beer and BBQ (Julian is fresh off of a stint at Killen’s BBQ) to Wynwood! Get there October 5th for brisket and beer from Hialeah’s soon to open brewery. Tickets are $20 and include one serving of food and tasters of Unbranded beer. Proceeds will be donated to Operation USA’s Hurricane Irma fund.

Tropical Malaise: Prologue at New World Symphony – Tropical Malaise: Prologue is a site-specific film by Miami-based artist Domingo Castillo examining life on earth 500 million years into the future— post-human existence. The premiere screening will take place at the WallCast in Soundscape Park, designed by international landscape architecture firm West8, positioned adjacent to the New World Center designed by Starchitect Frank Gehry in Miami Beach.

Laser Fridays – Starting in October, you can catch the laser light shows twice a month in the Frost Planetarium—permanently. On the first and third Friday of each month, rock out with a retro throwback to the classic laser light spectacles you know and love. From Pink Floyd to Beyoncé to Daft Punk, they’re fusing music from some of the greatest artists of our time with old-school laser light visuals—all under the Planetarium’s 67-foot dome.

One Song & A Beatle – Miami’s music community comes together to help raise funds for Puerto Rico, Mexico & the U.S. in the aftermath of the recent tragic weather events. A minimum of $10 donation at the door but more is greatly appreciated.
