August is a bizarre month in Miami. It’s not full summer, not yet autumn, with nightly breezes swishing the day’s humidity away. People are reluctantly prepping their their minds for the upcoming daily grind to come, and the city is welcoming the last stream of relaxing tourists before the year picks back up. But have no fear, our city has got you covered with tons of great distractions for the work that lays ahead:

Monday, August 1st:

Pokemon: The First Movie – One of Miami’s cult late-night movie outfits, Secret Celluloid Society, has taken advantage of the recent Pokemon craze and is bringing the 1998 animated film to Gramps for a fun free movie night.

Thursday, August 4th:

Breakfast Treats & BeatsCelebrate Miami’s bursting music scene at MADE on Thursday, August 4th for a special early bird jam featuring some of their most talented tenants. DJ sets by III Points & SAFE (Electric Pickle Co.), complimentary Salty Donut munchies (while supplies lasts) and Mad Chiller coffee. Miami’s music industry members will have a chance to work out of MADE for free all day long.

Rooftop Unplugged SessionsMagic washes over the city skyline at the Filling Station Lofts for the crowd-favorite concert, Rooftop Unplugged Sessions! Now at the newly renovated outdoor pool. Take in an intimate performance by local eclectic spirit and soulful performer, Alejandro Elizondo. Enjoy handmade ice cream sandwiches by Wynwood Parlor and sips to drink in the soothing sounds and breathtaking views of the city.

Friday, August 5th:

Reel Creative CinemaA FREE weekend-long film festival celebrating the creative realms of the Miami Design District: art + culture, architecture + design, fashion + cuisine. Complimentary parking is available, screenings are FREE and OPEN to the public. Limited seats available; seating is on a first come, first served basis. Not all films are suitable for children.

Saturday, August 6th:

Free Bike TourLearn about Coconut Grove’s extensive history! The BID offers FREE bicycle tours to visitors and locals alike. Every first and third Saturday, join Royal Palm Tours of Miami, Frank Schema, as he uncovers the captivating history of Miami’s oldest and most charming community by visiting notable sites and taking participants on a scenic and historic ride through the verdant streets of Coconut Grove.

Still Grateful After All These YearsRemembering the life and music of Jerry Garcia… Join the celebration of his masterpieces on the 21st anniversary of his death, to reminisce about all our grateful moments, while we sip on great brews and listen to a live Grateful Dead tribute. Ebb&Flow will be performing 2 live sets of all your favorite Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band songs to keep you dancing and drinking all night long!

Thursday, August 11th:

Basquiat: The Unknown NotebooksCelebrate the opening of “Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks” with an art talk by artist William Cordova followed by a discussion with PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans and PAMM Assistant Curator María Elena Ortiz. On the terrace, Tradisyon Lakou Lakay dance ensemble and DJ Gardy will perform a traditional Vodou-inspired dance accompanied by magical melodies and beautiful rhythmic roots music of Haiti, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, combined with retro electronic music.

Movies Under the StarsThe A+E District collaboration with Miami Film Festival is back with their next installment of Movies Under the Stars at Canvas! Enjoy a free screening of “Cobain: Montage of Heck” Directed by Brett Morgan. Grab bites by Box of Chacos, ice cream sandwiches by Wynwood Parlor, and gourmet popcorn by Mad Chiller, and sip on Vice City Bean coffee, plus alcoholic refreshments. Art for Amnesty Presents: “People on the Move” – A dynamic showcase of artwork as part of Amnesty International’s Art for Amnesty program. This will be a lively and engaging reception with local artists, changemakers, activists, and community members. There will also be a discussion panel portion of the evening, with opportunities for attendees to learn and ask questions.The purpose of this event is to bring awareness and discussion of human rights and social justice issues to members of the community in Miami through art.

Saturday, August 13th:

Slide the CitySlide the City is a family friendly slip-and-slide water party event. There will be live music, food, drinks, water, and of course the biggest slip and slide ever to hit asphalt. Don’t worry, we’ve got it padded.This slide’s got more cushion than your grandpa’s orthopedic sneakers.Make sure to bring your water buckets, floaties, and water guns (non-realistic of course), to squirt, spray, splash, and get all attending soaked.

Villain Theater 1 YearIt is because of their outstanding audiences, dedicated performers, and fearless leaders that Villain Theater has become such a powerhouse for entertainment in such a short amount of time. Come celebrate with them and their special guest, Jimmy Carrane on August 13th! Not only will he be offering workshops during the day, but he will be conducting his nationally-recognized podcast Improv Nerd and then performing with the Villains in Tales From The Magic City at Villain Theater Presents: Saturday Gigantic.
