Culture Guide: May 1st – 15th

Miami’s world-famous heat is back at it again with the usual blaze, and although you may think it would slow things down on a culture standpoint, you’re far from right. New venues are housing local artists for late-night getdowns, and classic hotspots are boasting a kaleidoscope of culture as we enter the middle of Spring. What a time to be out and about in the city, and there’s something waiting for everyone.

We’ve gone ahead and made your two-week schedule of happenings up for you, from literary talks to free live shows, Miami’s culture game is strong and we’re happy to be your guides:

Sunday, May 1st:

Miami Is an Island – From the minds behind The Broken Shaker and set in the formerly known Magnum Club, The Anderson Bar is a great lazy hang with delicious cocktails and local vibes. They’re starting a Sunday party, complete with a lineup of local DJs featuring the all-vinyl king, Mr. Brown.

Words & Wine – Join your favorite local singer-songwriters and poets at the first Sunday Funday – Words & Wine event at the original Books & Books in Coral Gables. In this simple set up, the open mic night will feature a relaxed evening where you can wind down to some spoken word, acoustic acts, comedy, drums, and much more. Enjoy happy hour specials until 10PM.

Monday, May 2nd:

Akira – A simple and self-explanatory event hosted by Secret Celluloid Society that will project arguable one of the greatest anime films of all time, Akira. Enjoy drink specials at Gramps in this fully immersive experience.

Wednesday, May 4th:

Viva Mexico Class – The Wynwood Yard is celebrating Cinco de Mayo a day early at Miami’s culinary incubator. Join Chef Sarah Myers as she curates a lesson in Mexican cooking, starting with fresh margaritas by Mortar & Pistil, then handmade guacamole, and finally hand-rolled tacos.

Thursday, May 5th:

Nacho Ordinary FestivalShutting down the street in front of Blackbird for a good ol’ fashioned block party! Watch live performances by Spam Allstars, Ketchy Shuby, Problem Kids and DJs Dj SharpSound, Damion Yancy, DJ Kace and a live Mariachi Band. Don’t miss the best Cinco de Mayo Fiestaval in Miami.

Free First Thursdays at PAMMMix and mingle with fellow cyclists over Cinco de Mayo-inspired happy hour specials; create your own spoke card with PAMM teaching artists; enter a bike raffle and enjoy a live performance by Afrobeta on the museum’s waterfront terrace. Free bike valet will be provided and free bike checkups will be available on-site.

Friday, May 6th:

The Acoustic CarpetJoin The Arts + Entertainment District for the first Acoustic Carpet of the year featuring a passionate performance by one of Spain’s finest artists who has now become a Miami staple, Javier Garcia and his talented band. Enjoy grub from Itsa Pizza Truck, delicious handmade cocktails, and brew + gelato by Mad Chiller.

Saturday, May 7th:

Lemon City StudiosLemon City Studios is having an all day PopUp Market, bringing together some of Miami’s best local vendors for the community to enjoy. Their goal is to provide a platform that brings together local artists and innovators who wish to showcase their work and participate in the growth of the community. Come for a day filled with music, art and inspiring people. They will include food and beverage vendors, clothing/accessories designers, yoga, meditation, sound healing, tarot reading, soccer.

Young Artist InitiativeThe Young Artist Initiative presents an exceptional partnership with Lou La Vie and the Miami Micro Theater for a new experience featuring live theater and an incredible lineup of musicians, live performances, installments, exhibitions, and more. All participating artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing the cultural rebirth occurring in the city of Miami and consider its effects and ramifications on the identity of our city.

Sunday, May 8th:

The Barnacle Moonlight Concert SeriesThe “Barnacle under Moonlight” Concerts are the most popular events at The Barnacle. Join locals for a concert, and see children playing next to the bay, friends and family sprawled out on the lawn with picnic baskets full of goodies, local singer Keith Johns honoring the craft of songwriting, and neighbors enjoying each others’ company.

Ibeyi at The North Beach Bandshell – The international twin sensation, Ibeyi is making a stop at Miami’s historic outdoor concert hall for a night of unparalleled musicality. Born in Paris and having lived in Cuba, their father is the acclaimed conga player for Buena Vista Social Club. The girls will be playing their colorful music thanks to The Rhythm Foundation.

Tuesday, May 10th:

The Jupiter CircleJoin Gaby Guzman of The Jupiter Circle and Anamari Portuondo of The Archive Gallery as they discuss how to turn a space into a real community for connection and shared values, both on and offline. The Archive Gallery of Fine Arts and Collectibles in South Miami has become a hub for beautiful and creative things and experiences, and it has translated into a vibrant and active online presence. Learn the tricks to build the right community and nurture those relationships as they become active supporters of your business. Wednesday, May 11th:

Let’s Talk About (un)affordable MiamiMiami-Dade’s income disparity continues to spiral out of control. We, as community, have the ability to reverse this trend by, first and foremost, engaging in conversation about the current housing situation. FIU Metropolitan Center invites you to attend an informal conversation with academics, community organizers, and political leaders of Miami-Dade County.

Thursday, May 12th:

Live at The Yard ft. PALO!Live at The Yard is back! This time, it takes a Latin turn for your perfect one-stop spice shop in the ‘wood. Welcomed on stage will be the Latin Grammy-nominated and local favorite, PALO! on the stage for an electrifying performance with an opening set by Sofy & Andres (of Elastic Bond). The New Tropic will be throwing down a mean Dominoes competition, so make sure to bring your A-game.

Friday, May 13th:

Jam at El Fresco – This is one of Miami’s secret gems, located behind Little Cuban Bread Sandwich Co. and run by the local favorite, Daniel “Krave” Fila. Covered in his murals and filled with tropical trees, come jam in an outdoor courtyard with food and drinks and an awesome set by Suenalo!

Breakbot at Bardot – Your favorite mainland lounge and live carpet just got a whole lot better, with the world-renowned electronic artist and producer, Breakbot. This is hands-down one of the best shows of the year.

Saturday, May 14th:

3D Animation for BeginnersFilmGate Interactive is offering a unique workshop with Maya, the industry standard in animation. Led by professional animator Andy Robertson, this class will cover the basics of 3D modeling, texturing, and rigging. Students attending the class will design a character from the ground up, and then use motion capture software to bring it to life. This class is perfect for any filmmaker who wants to learn to create more visually compelling content.
