Awesome Spotlight: Miami Girls Rock Camp

March 9, 2016admin

Not every great project is seen all the way through to fruition alone. Each and every one of us needs a gentle push, a shoulder to rely on, and some sound advice to get us through the difficult obstacles that arise when putting your ideas out there. As we continue our spotlights on Miami’s Awesome Foundation chapter and their mastery of working in the shadows, our latest piece is dedicated to another great grant-winner: Miami Girls Rock Camp.

As we all know (or hopefully do), self-esteem is a distinct issue that weighs heavy on many young ladies in our community, particularly the creative ones. As a means to provide a platform for personal growth, Miami Girls Rock Camp uses music and performance as primary tools to garner artistic and physical confidence for young women and girls in Miami. The week-long summer day camp program is for girls ages 8-17 and offers everything from instrument instruction, songwriting, and live performances by visiting artists, that eventually culminates in a grand showcase.

One of the most beautiful characteristics of the Miami Girls Rock Camp is that each of the classes is taught by female musicians who are volunteering their time to perpetuate a comfortable lifestyle for these young superstars. Ranging from beginner to seasoned artist, each of the classes offer instruction on instruments including drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and vocals for a musical knowledge as well-rounded as they come. Starting by forming their own bands, developing their own sound through songwriting classes, and even coming up with their own name and aesthetic, each of the girls realizes what it’s like to see something you created into reality. The most epic confidence booster.

The content incorporated into the camp doesn’t stop at creating music. Not only do the girls have live music during their lunch hour every day, but they have the opportunity to meet these local musicians and ask them anything they please. The performances and workshops range in a variety of topics from self-defense to zine-making with a new collection of sessions every camp year that all revolve around the message of self-worth and empowerment based on the grass roots fundraising that each volunteer member does all year around. That’s not the only thing that expands from year to year, they recently were awarded the Knight Foundation Matching Grant that has now allowed the camp to take on more students than ever.
