Summer is finally upon us with the solstice coming in just a few days. With a collective groan, most of Miami isn’t looking forward to the heat, especially since heatwaves have been flowing in heavily. But have no fear! If there’s anything true 305 natives have learned, it’s how to turn that heat into a really great party…or an excuse to stay cool inside while listening to the words of an influential artist.

Wednesday, June 17th:

Words & Wine Featuring Leisure Chief – Some of Miami’s most eloquent minds take the stage at The Social Lubricant in Wynwood for a night of slam poetry, freestyles, and worldly tunes hosted by Rio Dios Mio & Boogalou. Sonic vibes sponsored by Churchill’s Pub and provided by Battle Funk, with Leisure Chief on the stage. Crazy drink specials (we’re talking $1 shots & $3 Beer) til 11pm.

Thursday, June 18th:

PAMM Third Thursdays – Presented by Poplife, this Thursday hang at the Perez Art Museum is featuring the sounds of the skilled producer, John Hancock III. Entrance not only gets you into the jam, but you can check out their current “Poetics of Relation” exhibit, grab a happy hour drink and take in the views on Biscayne Bay, or even have a bite at the Verde restaurant.

Summer in EXILE – Catch the second to last installment of Summer in EXILE this Thursday at The Standard Spa, Miami Beach and explore local publishing with Jai-Alai Books featuring Executive Editor P. Scott Cunningham and Creative Director Seth Labenz as they present their philosophy about, and process behind literary book-making.

Camp Lo Album Release – The perceptive minds at Nature Sounds are bringing Camp Lo’s current album, Ragtime Hightimes to the live carpet at Bardot this Thursday. Sandwiched between two sets by DJ YNOT and Mr. Brown, this will definitely be a jam and a half.

Friday, June 19th:

Miyazaki! Ghibli’s Master of Japanese Animation – With Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement and the imminent closing of the fabled Ghibli Studios he lifted to heights only attained by Disney at its prime, the glorious era of feature-length hand-drawn animation is, sadly, drawing to an end. The brilliant souls at Coral Gables Art Cinema are bringing his masterpieces to the big screen for a full week from June 19th to the 26th! All showings will be in their original Japanese with English subtitles unless otherwise noted.

SpeakFridays – Miami’s most diverse open mic night has traveled down to invade a new location: The Bakehouse Art Complex. With a musical performance by Vacant Agent Music, Alan Meneses aka Pazmal& David Giraldo aka VLVT Jones, and hosted By Robert Lee & Chris Kane. Plus, you’ll catch Mad Chiller there doing what they do best with brew and gelato.

Saturday, June 20th:

GOGO MOAD! Islands for My Family – In 2012, MDC MOAD artist Florencio Gelabert created the sculpture-turned-performance-art piece titled Islands For A Friend as part of the 11th Havana Biennial. Now, you and your family can craft islands of your own, representing the diversity and distance between your families using a myriad of materials available at their monthly free community pop-up for kids of all ages.

Free Screening of “The Big Lewbowski” – The Actor’s Playhouse in Coral Gables is putting on the dude-iest of films, The Big Lebowski, at The Miracle Theater for free. Come enjoy a night of laughs, White Russians, and sandal wearing. Make sure to arrive early to reserve yourself a seat, hold it down, because nobody f*cks with The Jesus.

Sunday, June 21st:

Lazy BrunchBQ – The Arts + Entertainment brings their second installment of your favorite Sunday hang, Father’s Day style. With tunes from local bands like Sigh Kicks, Krisp, and Afrobeta; BBQ crafted by Coyo Taco; gelato from Mad Chiller; Deep Eddy Vodka Cocktails and Airstream Apothecary’s garden-infused drinks. Plus, everyone’s favorite friends, The New Tropic will be showing up with interactive patio games for a family affair.

Tuesday, June 23rd:

Bar Games: Miami Against Humanity – The New Tropic brings to the city yet another awesome way to interact with cool people and spend a night of fun…and drinking. It’s meet other awesome people, using a single game, night. And that’s pretty cool.

Movies Under the Stars – Miami International Film Festival and the Arts + Entertainment District bring us their last outdoor cinema series for the Summer with A Gun in Each hand (Una Pistola en Cada Mano) from the Spanish filmmaker, Cesc-Gay. With wine curated by Barton & Guestier, Coyo Taco + Gaucho Ranch on grub plus Michelle’s Cookies, Mad Chiller brew, and move-themed cocktails by Airstream Apothecary.

Saturday, June 27th:

SAFE Present TRUS’ME – The UK late-night soul Dance music producer whose impeccable skills founded the label, Prime Numbers — TRUS’ME is well-seasoned in bringing the house down and he’ll surely do just that at Electric Pickle next Saturday. Come early and catch some of Miami’s best resident sounds, and enjoy some tasty drinks while you’re at it.

Wynwood Green & Art Market – Wynwood’s first community market is here! Made possible by the Our Miami Public Space Challenge, a project of The Miami Foundation and Health Foundation of South Florida, the Bakehouse Art Complex Wynwood Green and Art Market will feature South Florida grown or created farm-to-table produce, craft foods and products; along with quality art, handcrafts, and artisanal goods.

Abbey Brewing Co. 20th Anniversary – One of Miami’s oldest brewing companies is turning 20!
