Empowering Resilient Women & Girls – The CLEO Institute created ‘Empowering Resilient Women and Girls, The Power of WE’ – a program for women and adolescent girls to connect the dots between climate change, health risks, economy, emergency preparedness, and civic engagement.

Theatre Think Tank: Art’s Role in Social Change – Miami New Drama presents Theatre Think Tank Series: One Night in Miami…TALK #3: Art’s Role in Social Change. Reine Paradis Opening – Markowicz Fine Arts presents French artist Reine Paradis for her debut solo exhibition in Miami. Pulsito: New World Symphony Latin Tribute – Experience the magic of the New World Symphony (NWS) like never before in an outdoor musical celebration: Pulsito! In anticipation of its Pulse: Latin Beats club-style concert on November 9th, NWS Fellows will be taking over the Lincoln Road Euclid Stage on October 18th for a tribute to the rhythms of the Latin world, featuring Miami’s very own Cuban songstress, Leslie Cartaya.

I Love You Before, I Love You Now, I Love You After Reception – On view September 12-November 9th, this exhibition emphasizes Shakkei, a Japanese term describing 17th century borrowed scenery, is the principle for incorporating background landscape into the composition of a garden, found in traditional East Asian garden design. To highlight the connection between environmental initiatives and contemporary culture in the Everglades, curator Deborah Mitchell also exhibits The Million Orchid Project, an orchid propagation experiment, courtesy of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

Flaming Classics: Stage Fright – Alfred Hitchcock’s STAGE FRIGHT is one of his notoriously under-appreciated films and marks his brief return to the United Kingdom. The film is unique in that it both features a strong female protagonist as well as the Hitchcock blonde divided into two performances by Jane Wyman and Marlene Dietrich respectively. It is a mystery-thriller with all of Hitchcock’s best signatures, including a dark sense of humor, throughout.

La Medea – a Greek Myth Reimagined – A Greek Tragedy Reimagined as a Latin-disco Variety Show! Music Movie Series: The Public Image is Rotten – After the breakup of the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd (PiL)– his groundbreaking band which has lived on nearly 15 times as long as his first one. How to See in the Dark – “How to see in the dark” looks to artists who share an interest in the politics of visibility. Toward these concerns, these artists make use of aesthetic and conceptual strategies that privilege the opaque, encrypted, or clandestine. Works in the exhibition negotiate tensions between representation and abstraction, assimilation and interference, action and withdrawal, mastery and unknowing. Folding into darkness, the exhibition invests in improvisational choreographies of refusal and failure, finding respite in the dissolution of figure-ground, near and far, and the thwarting of an easy read.

Flaming Classics: Psycho 35mm – Closing out QUEER FEAR is one of Hitchcock’s best-known works: PSCYHO. It is among the queerest of the queer in his oeuvre for the way it redefined narrative structure and movie-going habits, and played with genre. It even denotes its own chapter in Alexander Doty’s Flaming Classics, from which we stole the name of the series.

Tidal Town Hall – This Tidal Town Hall event is an opportunity for voters to hear ideas for solutions to Sea Level Rise and other related topics directly from candidates running for public office, so that they may make an informed choice at the polls. Candidates for office at all levels of government, from Congress to Florida’s state legislature, to local municipal positions will be asked to discuss their plans for action to protect Floridians from the risks inherent in rising seas at these nonpartisan forums.
