The Can’t-Miss Gems in Doral
April 9, 2018admin
For many locals, Doral is a “grey zone” area, seemingly difficult to navigate and separated from the rest of the city. For those of us in the know however, we’re completely aware that just because a neighborhood is west of I-95 doesn’t mean it doesn’t bleed 305 blood. Although Doral might be younger than most, it’s a flourishing neighborhood filled with a vibrant and highly Latin American culture. More than a premiere golfing location, it’s home to some of the fastest growing small businesses, a successful school district, and a whole lot of passion. Here are some of the many reasons you should keep it top of mind for your future explorations:
Free Local Transit
That’s right. Grabbing a hint from the rest of the city’s public transportation system, Doral decided to take the matter into their own hands. The City of Doral decided to help fund its own free trolley system privately that takes you virtually everywhere. Equipped with A/C and free WiFi, the experience is exactly what you need to start your crusades on an efficient foot.
Your Favorite Local Beers
Now that you won’t be driving around Doral, you can taste the local beers you love right out of their home breweries. One of the very first production breweries in Dade, M.I.A. Beer Company has had their facilities in Doral since the beginning. Then there’s Biscayne Bay Brewing Company, The Tank Brewing Co. and Tripping Animals too.
Due in part to the vast Latin population in Doral, the Museum of the Americas provides a huge opportunity for higher-level art. It’s one of the few art institutions in Florida to foster and promote both established and emerging contemporary artists of every origin. Artists are even provided with career counseling and referrals to support the fine artists in Miami-Dade.
Seriously Good Eats
You might not believe it, but Doral is also home to some of the most delicious flavors around the region. Some of our personal favorites, the spots we always hit when we go, start with Dragonfly Izakaya & Fish Market. The Japanese pub-like spot has mouth-watering sushi, sashimi, and robata explosions. Then there’s Macondo, another personal fave, for it’s authentic Colombian brew and bites.
Frolic in the Park
Downtown Doral, a burgeoning corner of the city, has many of its own gems hidden up its sleeves. Aside from a well-connected community, they have one of the most beautiful parks in all of Miami-Dade County. Downtown Doral Park is equipped with newly landscaped digs, dog-friendly pastures, and rolling greens. At its center, a beautiful rock art formation invites you for a perfect backdrop to their many events.
We’ve mentioned that Doral houses a rich population of Latin-American cultures, and we can’t stress it enough. It boasts a large Brazilian and Venezuelan demographic and it works hard to make sure they feel welcome. With community events geared to those cultures, authentic food, and multi-lingual options everywhere. Much like the rest of Miami, these cultures have been able to thrive in this friendly pocket.
Finally, for those of us inspired by our younger generations, they’ve has got it right. Their A+ Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School is considered one of the best in the nation. The school thrives in its dual-language programs and is a Gold STEAM Designation School. It’s one of the fastest-growing schools in the county system too, but we’re not surprised.
