Now that the whole city is ramping up for what we call “season” where every venue, every surface is washed in the vibrant colors of culture for the cooler parts of the year, things are going full steam ahead. This phenomenon reaches even as far up as North Beach, where the historic Bandshell Park acts as an anchor to concerts, dance nights, and more throughout the year. The awesome people over at the Rhythm Foundation have a wonderful lineup for us this fall, check out our top picks:
Kicking off the season with a special hosting of “The Flight of the Guitar: Dreaming of Paco de Lucia” and subsequent concert on October 29th, The Rhythm Foundation has quite a bit of big Flamenco names coming to the city this fall. They have a special edition of their Dance Band Night series in partnership with Siempre Flamenco and Rhythm Foundation on September 28th, where you can enjoy a night of rumbas, sevillanas and flamenco, all for free.
From Paris to Cuba and all points in between, the twin sisters of Ibeyi created a global sensation with their 2015 debut. The young artists immersed themselves in their Afro-Cuban roots (their father was the famed Cuban percussionist, Anga Díaz of Buena Vista Social Club), and collaborated with musical luminaries like Beyoncé and Alvin Ailey along the way. Last spring they came to the Bandshell for a sold out performance and are returning on Saturday October 28th so make sure to get your tickets!
World Music & Jazz
The Rhythm Foundation has always been at the forefront of bridging the gap between the sounds of the world and Miami’s stages. This fall they’re bringing everything from far-reaching Italian music meant to put you into a trance of music and movement, to the addictive movements of French swing, and even a big band performance by UM’s own Frost School of music.
Ileana “iLe” Cabra, a/k/a PG-13, the fierce young songstress of Puerto Rico’s world-renown alternative/hip-hop/rock band Calle 13, joined the band when she was only 16. Now a 2017 Grammy award winner, ILE makes her solo Florida debut November 2 at the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach, after levitating across stages with her brother René (Residente) in Calle 13 for more than a decade. Get your tickets here.
Dance Band Night
The venue may have a seasonal lineup spanning across virtually all musical cultures, but it’s a great thing when these institutions continue to provide community programming and making culture accessible to all. Their Dance Band Night series returns with the free and open-community dance classes and live music performances for all to enjoy. Starting with Siempre Flamenco on the 28th, to Miami’s own The French Horn on October 12th, UM Frost Big Band on November 9th, and rounding off the season on December 14th with Damian J Project presents Trad305.
