Prism’s Guide to Biscayne Green
January 4, 2017
Alright. We know. You’re all asking the same question: “What the hell is Biscayne Green and why am I seeing it everywhere?!” Aside from Downtown Miami’s first pop-up promenade that’ll take over three massive parking lots on Biscayne Boulevard, it’s pretty much the most epic collection of events the likes of which our city has never seen. And it all starts tomorrow. To help you avoid the FOMO and actually get a feel for just how game-changing it’ll all be, check out our breakdown below:
Out of all the artistic things out there, one things reigns true: people love music. Starting strong, their Grand Opening celebration this Friday, January 6th features local heavy-hitters like Locos Por Juana and Elastic Bond. Over the next three weeks, they’ll have two Biscayne Live shows. The first, a powerful performance by the Latin GRAMMY-nominated Raquel Sofia and Javier Garcia, and the second with the local sensation: Yoli Mayor and Keith Johns. All ending in their Last Hoorah featuring the epic Latin funk outfit PALO! and the rockabilly powerhouse Patrick & The Swayzees.
If there’s one thing Miamians take seriously, it’s food. And Biscayne Green gets that to the core. On Tuesdays it’s food trucks gathering for the Downtown lunch crowd. There’s a Puppy Brunch happening this Sunday where dogs and their owners can both fill their bellies with the flavors of some of Miami’s best eateries at everyone’s favorite weekend feast. It all culminates in Downtown’s first food festival featuring a dozen neighborhood restaurant, live tunes, and more: Taste of Downtown on Saturday, January 14th.
Who doesn’t love a good movie? Well, thanks to O, Cinema, Biscayne Green’s Sunday nights will be transformed into outdoor film screenings all with a music theme. First up is the critically-acclaimed documentary on Amy Winehouse, Amy. The next showing is another documentary on a legendary late great musician, Marley. And finally, another homage to a musical phenomenon, Purple Rain.
For all the fitness gurus out there, Biscayne Green has a pretty impressive lineup of blood-pumping workshops. From a morning bootcamp in partnership with lululemon athletica and an afternoon yoga flow by Tropical Vinyasa with meditation and complimentary coconut water and KIND Snacks, to a full Saturday of relaxation by The Standard Miami Beach featuring yoga, health healing and more.
Every night, the city takeover will ooze with community and connection, but some things are more indicative of how this can actually change the daily life of surrounding residents and increase pedestrian traffic. Every Wednesday you can enjoy free WiFi on the greens, plus some stellar coffee pop-ups for a true park co-working experience in the morning and locally-crafted beer happy hours in the afternoon. On Thursday the 12th and the 19th, they’ll be hosting some community dance classes en plein air like Tango and Flamenco as an ode to the great promenades of the world.
You can see all the great happenings here, but make sure to hop on transit and share this amazing happening with friends. Miami needs more things like this, now’s your chance to ensure they actually continue to happen!
