Why We Love Leon Bridges
August 29, 2016
I can answer that question in one word: nostalgia. But as my love affair with commas doesn’t allow for succinct responses, I’d rather elaborate on why Leon Bridges is one of my favorite acts to burst onto the scene in years. A key player in the current revival of old school soul, he has seemingly stepped out of a Texan time portal, swinging his way into the hearts of every person with a pair of ears. It’s refreshing and familiar all at the same time, and it makes us want to smile bigger than we have in a while.
That’s how we felt when we first discovered Leon Bridges. Sandwiched among a stellar lineup of acts at last year’s SXSW, one dude and a guitar– “just like the good old days”. What we didn’t know then was that in just a few short months he would not only be the 2015 Gulke Prize winner for Developing US Act, but would also have several NPR spotlights including a Tiny Desk Concert, top-billed spots on big Summer festivals like Outside Lands, and a heavy-hitting tour across the country along the way.
Everything from his production to his skinny ties are curated to fit his sound. Hazy videos, swooping back-up vocals, and an appreciation for diverse culture, he’s everything you want from a mid-twenties musician who knows what he’s all about. Ever since the release of his debut album, Coming Home, we have been blasting “Smooth Sailing” in our office, swaying to the saxophone stylings, all the alliterations. We can’t believe that a little over a year ago, we heard him for the first time, and he’ll be gracing Miami with his presence on September 13th. What better place to house such a classic sound than the historical Fillmore Miami Beach? We know we’re always suggesting things around the clock, but this is definitely something you can’t miss.
