Awesome Spotlight: Miami Marine Stadium Mural Project
April 18, 2016
As a born and bred Miami local, there are several places that hold a strong sense of nostalgia in my heart. One of those places is the Miami Marine Stadium. The times I spent after school, during rowing practice, and anytime in between at the then dilapidated outpost of Miami’s past or seemingly endless. Probably because it’s a landmark overlooked in time and kept secret by passionately loyal locals. It was scary and artistic all at the same time. It was a microcosm of Miami in itself.
That is, until a local group of visionary art fans submitted a genius project to The Awesome Foundation‘s Miami chapter. The idea was to wash the Key Biscayne stadium in murals by 20 artists both locally and internationally renowned. At a location that was once the pinnacle of entertainment in the city, run-down by time and unstable weather, bringing in a splash of color would be revolutionary. And it was. The process had 3 phases: bring in the muralists, produce a series of prints that help raise funds for Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, and produce two off-site shows to showcase the gallery within a gallery.
The historical building is defended by a collective of conservationists at Friends of Miami Marine Stadium. With the help of their Awesome Foundation grant, they were able to pay for artist costs and pool into setting up for their satellite shows where proceeds went to the revitalization of a nugget of Miami’s history. This is what we call collaboration for the betterment of all.
