If you aren’t aware of the magic that is Johnnyswim, prepare yourself. They are basically a real-life fairytale. Johnnyswim, a duo, made up of Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano, both songwriters who joined forces after meeting in Nashville. Not only did their work relationship result in magical music, their personal connection developed beyond songwriting (sparks did fly people). And if you didn’t already guess, they fell in love and tied the knot in a few years after meeting. So there you have it, the fairytale. One we are now all swooning over and dreaming of. Just wait though, we haven’t even made it to the part of the story about the dreamy tunes these love birds create.
Usually, I think musicians’ music can take a turn for the worse when they fall in love. Heartache and heavy emotions traded for sunshine and butterflies, nobody likes happy songs right? These two are a complete exception. They not only embody a sweet folk-y sound that is rich with life and joy. But they also bring a soulful R&B tone: Abner Ramirez’s voice can and will cut through the core of your being. If you don’t believe me, go listen to the track “Pay Dearly” and then try and tell me you didn’t feel his heaviness fall upon your soul.
They are so much more than just happy tunes to please your eardrums with catchy lyrical lines. They take you on a musical journey through the peaks and valleys of their lives. Something so many musicians have lost sight of lately, truly telling the listener a story. And no one tells a story better than the people who experienced it first hand and these songwriters have stepped into the spotlight, hand in hand, and are doing just that. Go ahead and press play, you won’t be let down by the journey Johnnyswim will take you on, I promise.
And as fairy tales go, here is the happy ending; they play tonight at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center. I mean how often do we really get to see magic happen before our eyes? See you there!
