Prism Picks: Suwannee Hulaween
October 13, 2015
Halloween is a tricky time of year, all puns intended. Between the slew of big DJ parties and sexy costume alternatives, sometimes a good old-fashioned party is the best way to go. But what if you took that party, extended it over three days, and plopped it in the middle of a friggin’ forest? Now that’s Hallow’s Eve.
The celebration we speak of is the oh-so-mystical, Suwannee Hulaween, the once traveling music festival that has now called the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park & Campground its home for the past three years. Led by jam band legends, The String Cheese Incident (who play a whopping 7 sets throughout the weekend), I personally have had some of the most magical experiences in my life at this festival and others at the Northern Florida venue. It’s part Neverland, part forest moon of Endor, but it’s entirely your own sacred playground.
From October 30th – November 1st, the age-old oaks and their hanging moss will sway to the rhythms of Pretty Lights, Primus, Chance the Rapper & The Social Experiment, STS9, Odesza, Slightly Stoopid, GRiZ, Lettuce, Railroad Earth, and even local blues powerhouse, JuKe. There will be funk at the amphitheater, there will be electro at the silent disco, there will be every sound under the sun ready to ride the “Ghoul Train” on Halloween night.
If you want to let your soul be revived by the sonic necromancy on-site, I suggest doing the full camping experience. No hotel, no luxury, be one with the spirits of the woods and gather a good group of buddies to camp the stress away. Stroll through the grounds, dive in the river, watch the bats come out at sunset, and skip along the Spirit Lake Promenade featuring light installations and art designs by some of the regions most talented metallurgists. Imagine a creeping forest filled with celestial reflections bouncing off the campground lake. Quite the full-body channeling.

The weekend will not just be filled with music, local organic vendors pepper the grounds in lieu of your usual greasy festival fare. We’re talking plant-based goodness for the healthiest soul in sight. Plus, Spirit Lake Workshops that include yoga and flow, traveling artists with the trippiest of visuals, carnival-style games in the Recycle Rewards tent by Green Team, and even a Disc Golf Tournament! I mean, if you’re not there by now, we don’t know how else to convert you.
The magic is real, and so will your soul searching be. Snag your weekend passes here and check out the full lineup! We’ll be on-site shooting you the best live content, interviews, and intimate looks. See you (or a version of you) there!
