Press Play: Gabriel Garzón-Montano
June 11, 2015
It seems like this has been the longest week of the year, and we’re just halfway through June. While it may only be Thursday, we’ve decided to give ourselves a break and celebrate the weekend one day earlier with some new tunes that will embody your entire being with good vibes and infectious beats. In case your ears have never turned on to Gabriel Garzón-Montano‘s work, it’s about time they get in the mood. Yeah, baby.
Part Colombian, part French and New York-born, Garzón-Montano is a singer, producer, and musician extraordinaire. His voice alone is chilling enough to harmonize with personal favorites like James Blake or FKJ, but paired with his immense multi-instrumental skill, it feels as though he can conquer anything…starting with our hearts. The sound that emanates from his fingers is both sexy and fragile, with exceeding lyrical profundity. It makes his musicianship intriguing to say the least, finding it hard to place his creations under just one genred roof.
I took the plunge a few months back and caught his set at Bardot and most definitely was not disappointed. He invokes everything you’d want from a musician: a hip sway here, a head bob there, then you close your eyes and before you know it, you’ve exhausted his entire Soundcloud page. He’s opened for Glass Animals, been on Drake’s radar, and is even close friends with Zoe Kravitz.
But the name-dropping shouldn’t matter since his music speaks for itself. I’ve gone ahead and picked out some of the tracks I think best encapsulate his talent so feel free to press play and really fall in love:
